'Idol' Back-Up Plan: Shania Twain

August 13, 2010

By THR staff report

As the "American Idol" judge selection process continues, sources tell TMZ that a deal to bring Jennifer Lopez on board isn't dead yet, but country star Shania Twain is a potential back-up.

Twain had a successful appearance this past season as a guest judge and mentor.

Fox has so far remained mum on the selection of judges for the new "Idol" season. Rupert Murdoch, chairman and CEO of Fox owner News Corp., recently also simply said the network is talking to various candidates.

Some observers have said that the continuing guessing game may help "Idol" keep good buzz going and could boost at least initial ratings for the show's new season next year.
