EMI Files Suit Against Social Networking Site
June 30, 2008 - Legal and Management | Digital and Mobile

By Antony Bruno, Denver

EMI Music Group on Friday filed a lawsuit against social networking site Hi5, alleging copyright infringement over user-uploaded videos that include music from the label's artists.

Also included in the suit is Hi5 video service provider VideoEgg and 10 "John Doe" defendants that will be named later.

VideoEgg's technology allows users to upload their clips, which the company then distributes to a number of other sites, and inserts video ads around them.

The company says it uses Audible Magic's filtering service to strip out protected content and that it never received a DMCA takedown notice from EMI in the past.
