September 02, 2010

By By Elizabeth Hurst

American Airlines? BlackAtlas.com hosted an intimate concert on Aug. 30 at Bowery Ballroom in NYC with Grammy Award-winning recording artist John Legend and Grammy Award-winning super-group The Roots, in celebration of their new album WAKE UP! due to hit stores on September 21.

American Airlines? BlackAtlas.com is a social networking site which combines the features of a travel site with the power of social networking to provide travelers with an opportunity to share experiences unique to the Black community. Pictured here at the event are American Airlines? Art Torno; John Legend; and BlackAtlas.com Editor-At-Large, Nelson George.

The concept for the collaboration on ?Wake Up? came to them around the time of the 2008 Presidential Election - from an idea to cover songs from great artists that came out around the time of the Civil Rights Movement. Legend and The Roots wanted to record songs that captured the energy of the moment and to cover artists who played music to express social conscious and to make songs that inspired people. Legend is pictured here, playing some of those songs from the new record at the BlackAtlas.com event.

The Roots' ?uestlove, played DJ for the evening and is pictured here, queuing up the next track during the evening's performance.
